Garden Soil Types - A Quick Soil Primer
Soil is the top several inches of the earth's crust. Soil is necessary for civilization to exist, as it supports the plant life that sustains forests, plains, agriculture and other habitats. Five basic factors influence the formation of soil, the bedrock, climate, local fauna and flora, topography and the passage of time. The gardener will find three layers of soils underlying their garden, the topsoil, and subsoil and parent material. The parent material is the minerals that originally formed the soil. The subsoil is the intermediate level between topsoil and the parent material and will have some qualities of both. The topsoil is the part that concerns most gardeners.
In the Dirt
On average a soil will contain about twenty-five percent air, forty-five percent mineral matter, twenty-five percent water and about five percent organic matter. These levels can vary according to soil type, location, rainfall and other factors. The average soil will include a number of organisms that live in it. These include earthworms, grubs, fungus, bacteria and plant roots.
Topsoil
Topsoil is the first layer of soil, and is the major concern of the gardener. Topsoil can range from a thin layer over the underlying subsoil, or several inches. Good garden topsoil can contain between two and ten percent organic matter. A good garden soil must have the following qualities:
Good aeration, to allow root penetration and allow oxygen to penetrate the soil
Porous enough to allow drainage, but not so porous as to allow soils to dry quickly
Moisture retentive
Soil Composition
Improving Topsoil
The major effort of the gardener should be to work constantly to improve the topsoil quality and fertility. Fertile, loose topsoil will produce healthy, fast growing plants. Healthy plants will suffer less insect damage, have fewer diseases and produce top quality vegetables with maximum nutrition. Poor management of topsoil can cause them to erode away quickly, exposing the less desirable subsoil.
The gardener will encounter six basic types of soils:
Loam
Clay
Silt
Chalk
Sand
Saline
Note, there are other soil types, but these are the most common.

Loam
Loam is the ideal type of soil for most types of agriculture. This soil will have about equal quantities of sand, silt and clay. It will also boast a high organic content. A good loam has all the qualities listed above, will warm quickly in the spring, be easy to cultivate and is ideal for the greatest number of plant types. The gardener constantly replenishes the organic, humus content of the soil. The gardener can use his fingers to test loam soil. The soil should be dark in color that is smooth to the feel and have a slightly gritty feel. A ball formed by pressing the soil together should crumble easily.
Clay
Clay particles are quite fine and create a tightly packed soil. Clay is high in nutrients and retains water well. It will take clay soils longer to warm in the spring and since these soils have good water retention, they tend to dry out slow. A clay soil will form a ball that does not crumble easily. Damp or wet clay soil is sticky to the touch. It is harder to cultivate, especially when wet as it has a tendency to stick to garden tools. Clay soils will grow good plants, as it is fertile. Improve using mulches, compost or green manure crops to add organic matter. Adding organic matter will also improve drainage.
Silt
Silty soils are silky to the touch and will leave a soil stain on the fingers. These soils heat up slowly in the spring. These soils are quite fertile and have excellent water retention. However, because of this trait, they compact easily and sometimes plants have a hard time extracting nutrients from the dense soil structure. Some plant roots will rot in these soils. If better drainage can be achieved, possibly by using raised beds, silt soils can make an excellent garden site. As with other soils, use compost, mulches and green manures to add organic content.
Sand
Made up of quartz, silica and other minerals, sandy soils feel gritty to the touch. Sandy soils allow water to drain away quickly and escape by evaporation. They tend to be low in fertility. It will not form a ball when rolled between the hands. Plants have difficulty using any nutrients in the soil, as they drain away quickly. These soils do warm up in the spring quickly and are easy to cultivate. Adding compost, using green manures and mulches can increase the quality of a sandy soil.
Peaty Soils
Peaty soils are dark and have a spongy, damp feel when compressed. Its high acidic content leads to slower decomposition of plant matter, leading to lower soil fertility. These soils also heat up quickly in the spring and have excellent water retention. Because they tend to stay wet, the gardener should supply some drainage like tiling it or use raised beds. Using lime or wood ashes can raise the ph level. Add compost or manure to increase soil fertility. These soils make excellent garden soils.
Quick Soil Type Test
Pour a trowel full of soil into a glass jar. Fill with water and shake well. Allow this to settle for several hours. In clay and silt soils, the water will remain cloudy. A layer of soil particles will form on the bottom of the jar. In peaty soils, several particles will float on the surface, some will sink to the bottom and the water will remain cloudy. In sandy soils, the water will be clear and a layer of sand will form at the bottom of the jar. A loam soil will leave the water mostly clear. The bottom should have several layers of soil particles on the bottom of the jar.
Soil PH
The ph scale indicates whether a soil is acid, neutral or alkaline. The ph range scale runs from 0 - 14, with soils below 7 classified as acidic and over 7 as alkaline. Most vegetable crops prefer a range between 5.5 and 7.0. The gardener can use a test kit from a garden supply store to test the ph. Use lime, or wood ashes to correct soil that is too acidic. Use aluminum sulfate to correct alkaline soils. Use care using these materials, as it is easy to overcorrect.

Introduction
The cabbage is an important food crop that is valuable because of its dense-leaved heads. Botanically, the plant is a biennial grown as an annual. During the first season, cabbages will form the head that serves as a nutritional source of food. During the second year the plant will flower and set seed. Gardeners wishing to grow their own cabbage seed will need to allow the plants to stand through the winter. They can then harvest the seed the following year. Since the cabbage is hardy to USDA Zone 6 - 9, this will not work in colder areas.
The cabbage heads range from just under a pound to well over nine pounds. Size depends upon the variety, weather and soil conditions. Cabbage is related to the other cole crops like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.
The cabbage is eaten in many forms. These include fresh, pickled, fermented (sauerkraut), steamed, stewed, sautéed, braised and fried. Cabbage may be preserved by freezing, canning or drying. Rich in nutrients, the cabbage provides a good supply of dietary fiber, too.
It is native to wild, rocky cliffs where it can grow unmolested by encroachment by other plants, which it cannot tolerate well. The thickened leaves allow the plant to store water.
Common Name:
The common name cabbage originally referred to all members of the cabbage family. That family includes cauliflower, broccoli, kale and many others. The name now refers to the plant we know as the cabbage. The word cabbage derives from the French word caboche, which means, "having a head."
Botanical Name:
Brassica oleracea - Capitata Group
The genus name is the Latin name for cabbage. The species name is Latin for "vegetable like".

Plant onion sets shallow, with the tops exposed. Onion plants should be no more than one inch deep. As the onions grow, the bulb exposes itself about the soil. It is best to allow this, as it will help keep the onion from rotting as it matures. Use well rotted compost or a slow release fertilizer at planting. Onions will deplete the fertilizer as they grow. Onions that mature in the less fertile soil should be sweeter than onions that still have fertilizer available to them. Use organic mulch like shredded leaves or grass clippings to reduce weeds and conserve soil moisture. Keep the onions watered well, as they have shallow roots and cannot delve deep for water. Do not allow the soil to become soggy, as that will induce rot. Pencil size onion plants will produce the best onions. Larger ones may go to seed while smaller ones will stay small. Plant both the larger and smaller seedlings close together and harvest in a few weeks as green onions.

The most common way to propagate sweet potatoes is by cuttings. Gardeners can purchase rooted cuttings in the spring from a nursery. They can also half submerge a sweet potato tuber in a glass of water by sticking three toothpicks in the side and suspending the root half in and half out of the water. In a few weeks sprouts will emerge which can be removed and rooted in moist potting medium or in water. Plant the rooted cuttings after all danger of frost has passed in the spring. Gardeners can also take cuttings from established plants in the garden in early fall. Root these and plant in a pot in a sunroom or sunny window. To root, cut the stem into sections with a leaf in each section. Submerge the leaf axil in moist potting soil and keep moist. In a couple of weeks, these should be rooted. Plant them in a pot, grow these all winter indoors, and pinch back in late winter. The plants should do well in a sunroom or south facing window. Do not allow them to freeze. New shoots will appear. Root these shoots in moist potting soil when they are two to three inches long and plant in the garden. Gardeners can also take whole potatoes that have sprouted in the spring and plant them directly in the garden. Cut the roots into sections, with each section containing at least one sprout. The sweet potato will sometimes flower and produce seed. Plant hybridizers use the seed to develop new varieties. Be careful if handling sweet potato seed as it is quite toxic.

Gardeners propagate cucumbers mainly by sowing seed purchased from a seed catalog or other seed retailer. It is possible to save seed from non-hybrid varieties of cucumber grown in the garden. To save seed, different varieties of cucumber must be separated by at leas one-half mile. Allow the cucumbers you wish to save seed from to ripen. The fruits saved for seed cannot be eaten. After the fruit has ripened, remove and allow the fruit to finish ripening in a cool, dry place for a few weeks. Slice the ripened seed lengthwise and scrape out the seeds and the jelly-like fluid with a spoon. Put the fluid and the seeds in a jar at room temperature for three to four days. During this time, the jelly will dissolve and the good seeds will sink. A fungus will form on the top. Skim the immature seeds and debris from the top of the liquid after the jelly has dissolved. Spread the seeds on a screen or paper towel to dry. Store the seeds in a cool area. A crisper drawer of the refrigerator is fine. The seed should stay good for a couple of years. Save the seed from at least three different plants to prevent inbreeding depression.

Planters usually sow cabbage seed from ten to twelve weeks before the last frost date in the spring. After germination and the emergence of the first true leaves, the seedlings are transplanted to larger containers. Then they are moved to a hot bed or cold frame. Cabbage is frost tolerant and the seedlings may be set out in the garden about four weeks before the last spring frost. The heads develop from between fifty to ninety days or more, depending upon the variety. Gardeners will find three main maturity groups, early (50 - 60 days), mid season (60 - 75 days) and late season (75 days or more). Planting a few of each maturity ensures a longer harvest. Usually the cabbage plants will grow smaller, secondary heads after the main head is harvested. These will be much smaller, but still quite good.

Gardeners willing to grow their own seedlings will have a much greater varieties available. Locally grown seedlings are usually best for purchase. Local nurseries will grow the best types for their region.
Fall Crop
It is also possible to grow cabbage as a fall crop. Sow seed in late spring to early summer and plant in the garden in mid to late summer. Pest populations are high during this time. The gardener needs vigilance to prevent cabbageworms from devouring the young seedlings. The gardener must also maintain adequate moisture levels, in the summer heat. This is true especially when the seedlings are small. Most cabbage varieties make good fall crops, as the heads seem to get sweeter when nipped by the first autumn frosts.
Five Categories
There are five main categories of cabbage:
Savoy – Characterized by crimped or curly leaves, mild flavor and tender texture
Spring Greens – Loose-headed, commonly sliced and steamed
Green – Light to dark green, slightly pointed heads. Greens are the most common type grown.
Red – Smooth red leaves, often used for pickling or stewing
White, also called Dutch – Smooth, pale green leaves

The tuber, or potato, is not a root. It is a modified stem. Gardeners use this tuber to propagate the plant. Gardeners may use leftover potatoes from last year’s crop, or using certified seed potatoes. It is best to use certified seed. Potatoes sold at the grocery store may also be used, but they may have viral diseases that they can transmit to the soil. Potato growers treat these potatoes with a chemical to prevent them from sprouting. Thus, they may not sprout and if they do, the potatoes may not grow well.

Cut the potatoes, leaving two to three eyes per section. Plant the eyes in a furrow or hole about one to two inches deep and about a foot apart about two weeks before the last frost date. The rows should be at least sixteen inches apart. They should be further apart if using a garden tiller to cultivate. Allow plenty of room so the tines don't cut the developing potatoes. The sprouts will begin to emerge from the soil in about two weeks. Potatoes can withstand a light frost with little or no damage. They do need protection from heavier frosts. The potato is a perennial in its native South American climate and the tubers can survive underground in USAD Zones 3 - 9.

Peas, and other legumes garden plants like beans, have the ability to take nitrogen in the atmosphere and fix it in the soil in which they grow. The plants do this by using bacteria located in nodules on the plants roots. This symbiotic relationship is beneficial to both the legumes and the bacteria. The bacteria take nitrogen from the oxygen and, by a complex chemical process, convert it to ammonia. Ammonia is nitrogen in a form that plants can use it. The plants pay the bacteria back by supplying sugars to the bacteria that it needs to survive. The bacteria are a special kind called Rhizobium bacteria. The bacteria are specific to the plant, thus the Rhizobium bacteria that peas need are a different species from the ones that beans require. This bacteria is usually present in garden soil.
Deficiencies of Rhizobium
If the type of legume you are planting has not been planted in the garden before, if it is a new plot or you have not planted the plant before it is possible that these bacteria are not present. Using chemical fertilizers or pesticides can also kill the bacteria. To ensure that the bacteria are present, you may coat the seed with an innoculant that contains the correct bacteria at seed planting time. The innoculant sold in garden stores and mail order seed supply companies usually contain a mix of bacteria that will inoculate most garden crops. These inoculants are inexpensive. The inoculants will have an expiration date and must be stored properly for them to survive. The species needed for most garden crops are:

Legume crops like peas and beans will fix more nitrogen in the soil than they need. This nitrogen is available for future crops grown in the garden and can reduce fertilizer for other vegetables. Farmers have taken advantage of this nitrogen fixing ability for generations by rotating legume crops with other field crops.

Tomatoes are easy to grow and have few requirements to produce tomatoes for the table. Tomatoes require warm temperatures, a soil high in organic matter, and a minimum of six hours of sunlight per day. A good fertilizer, 10-10-10, is best. Tomatoes do not want a high nitrogen fertilizer. If you give them too much, you will have a lot of nice green foliage and few tomatoes.
To increase the organic matter in the soil work compost or rotted leaves into the top four to six inches of soil. Set the plants three feet apart if you are not going to stake them, as close as eighteen inches if you are going to stake them or put them in cages. Plant them after all threat of frost has ended.
The tomato is a perennial in its native climate. In most of the United States, it is grown as an annual because the tomato, a tropical plant, will not stand the winters of a temperate climate. The tomato, being the most popular plant grown in home gardens, is available in a host of varieties, colors, shapes and sizes. Generally, set the plants in rows about three feet apart, unless you are staking them. Then you may place them two feet apart. Harvest typically begins in mid to late July, depending upon the variety grown and weather conditions. It will last until frost in Mid October.
