Short History of Museums
Capitoline Museums
Pope Sixtus IV donated several bronze statues to the city of
Rome in 1471, placing the
collection on Capitoline Hill. The museum, still in existence and open to the
public, claims the status of the oldest museum in the world. The collection of
artifacts and art grew over the years to include ancient Roman statues,
inscriptions, art, jewels and other historic artifacts. Pope Clement XII opened
the museum to the public in 1734. The museum includes three main buildings
linked by an underground gallery that passes under the piazza. Visitors will
find a restaurant on the top level that provides a magnificent vista of Rome .
